At the height of its colonial power, Spain was known as "el imperio donde nunca se pone el sol" — "the empire where the sun never sets" — stretching from Europe to the Americas to the Philippines. Unlike France, it was never a centralized state, but instead a kingdom made up of kingdoms and viceroyalties that was home to an immense diversity of races, languages, and climates. This concert associated with the Blanton Museum of Art's exhibition "Spirit and Splendor: El Greco, Velázquez, and the Hispanic Baroque," will consist of seventeenth-century vocal and instrumental music from the Crowns of Castile & León and Aragón, and the Viceroyalties of Naples, New Spain, and Peru, with works by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Manuel de Sumaya, Francesc Valls, and Roque Jacinto de Chavarría.
